This list covers the well-organised riverine tribes of the Upper Amazon. It starts with the appearance of the first known external rivals they could have fought (the Chanca of the Andes) and continues until the expulsion of their Jesuit protectors led to the depopulation of most of their settlements (only recently revealed by aerial photography) by disease, migrations and Portuguese slave-raiding. One army reported by 16c conquistadores was 60,000 archers. Reference: Armies of the 16th Century Vol 2 1. Heath.
