I/33 VILLANOVAN ITALIAN 1000 BC - 650 BC

This list covers the lowland Italian Iron-Age cultures before the rise of Etruscan and Greek influence. Defence originally rested entirely on a spearmen class with spear, sword and scutum (3Wb); then as social stratification increased around 800 BC adding helmet and bronze pectoral and replacing the wooden scutum with a round bronze-faced shield held by a central grip, and now supplemented by less prosperous unarmoured warriors with mostly headless but fire-hardened wooden javelins, light axe, dagger and scutum.
