This list covers the armies of the Paionian tribes that lived north of ancient Macedonia; from their first contact with the Persians. By the 4th century BC, they had formed a small kingdom. This was usually dominated by its big neighbour; and under Lysimachos and the later Antagonids was formally incorporated into Macedonia. Paionian cavalry fought effectively for Alexander. The only depiction is of a rider in a vertically striped short-sleeved tunic and crested attic helmet, with spear, possibly a sword on a baldric, but no shield; and seated on a large fur or sheepskin saddle cloth extending around the horse’s chest.
