II/8 CAMPANIAN, APULIAN, LUCANIAN & BRUTTIAN 420 BC - 203 BC

This list covers southern Italian armies from the Oscan conquest of Greek Italy until Hannibal’s departure at the end of the second Punic War. The heavier foot had javelins, shield, helmet, corslet (unless Apulian rankers) and/or greaves. Cavalry had helmet, javelins, about half corslets; and perhaps from 350 BC shields. The Campanians had a high reputation in the 5th century BC, but only cavalry retained this after a century of soft living. In 340 BC, they became unenfranchised Roman citizens and adopted Roman infantry methods. Some Apulians joined alliances against Rome, first with Pyrrhos of Epiros (11/27) and later with Hannibal (11/32). The Lucanians fought for Hannibal until 206 BC. The Bruttians were his staunchest allies and some accompanied him back to Africa and fought at Zama. Reference: Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars D. Head.
